Mincing poodles, dolorous pugs, tremulous yorkies, twitchy min-pins, mute yearning basenjis, cottony bichon frises with their black button eyes - all submit to the inquisitor's mitt. The big soft hand of a strange warm giant passes over their eyes, opens their mouths, testing and judging. Gums: good. Teeth: clean. Then the handler lifts the dog by the neck and the butt, deposits it on the ground and off they trot, the tiny dog's legs a furry blur as it tries to keep up with the handler. They all look good. They all behave. They all were winners somewhere once. But now it's time for most to lose.
