My purpose in sharing this story is to address the issues of labor assistants who have never given birth. I turned to a teacher of mine, Adrienne Jamiel, who is also a personal trainer, for guidance. What follows is an account of an experience she had doing a high ropes course.
"I've never had the experiences of some of the women I facilitate. I've never given birth, I don't have panic disorder, nor do I suffer from agoraphobia. But over the years, I've learned two important lessons. The first is that my `lack of experience' actually protects me from making unwarranted assumptions about what a client is feeling or experiencing in any moment.
