When excavations began a century ago at the cliffs of Mesa Verde, archaeologists were in search of information about the people who lived there long before the arrival of European explorers to the New World. These Pueblo people of the Classic Period (A.D. 1100-1300) left behind informative traces of their culture. But sometimes, archaeological discoveries can lead to more questions.
In their diggings of cliff dwellings, archaeologists came upon a puzzling room. In front of most Pueblo villages, they found a round, underground room. It was built of small and large shaped stones embedded in mud. The room's flat roof had a center hatch, or opening.
