Rene-Robert Cavelier was born in the bustling city of Rouen, France, on November 21, 1643. He grew up in a household dominated by religion and business. His father was a devout Roman Catholic and a successful cloth merchant known for his thrift and expertise. The senior Cavelier so favored this second son that he gave him family property called La Salle. Robert later assumed this name, one he would answer to for the rest of his life.

Early on, La Salle's father recognized his son's intelligence. Following a succession of tutors, he sent the nine-year-old boy to a local grammar school run by the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, where La Salle flourished.
