In the fall of 1683, La Salle returned to France. In both the New World and France, enemies of La Salle had nearly ruined his most recent expedition. There was a new governor of Canada, Le Febvre de La Barre, who did not support La Salle as Frontenac had. Rumors of La Salle's death had even begun to spread.
On a spring day in 1684, La Salle arrived at the Palace of Versailles to meet with the king's minister, and later, the king himself. La Salle hoped King Louis XIV would grant his proposal to permanently colonize the territory that he had explored along the Mississippi River.
