In the early 1770s, the American Colonies wanted to be independent from Great Britain. Benedict Arnold and other Colonial merchants refused to pay British taxes on their imported goods. The Colonies began to form militia groups to prepare for war against Great Britain.

Arnold was a man of action and saw the war as an exciting opportunity. In December 1774, he volunteered for the New Haven, Connecticut, militia. He was elected captain of the group in March 1775. Arnold and his men marched to Lexington, Massachusetts, but they arrived too late to participate a battle there. Impatient for action, Arnold designed a plan of his own.
