Companies see strong growth for the high-tech plastic.

DSM AND TICONA, Celanese's technical polymers business, plan to set up a joint venture plant for polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) in Europe. Such a facility will virtually double their combined capacity for the engineering plastic.

Ticona and DSM Engineering Plastics have signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate the feasibility of building the facility, but its location has not yet been chosen.

The plant, which has a target startup date of 2003, will have a capacity of 40,000 to 60,000 metric tons per year in a 50-50 joint venture, according to DSM.
