No Northwest suburb embodies the term "melting pot," quite as much as Buffalo Grove.
Now home to more than one-third of the Jewish population in the Northwest suburbs, the village also has become a destination for a wide variety of European and Hispanic immigrants.
Last year in Wheeling Township Elementary District 21, English was the second language for about 2,800 students, who speak 53 languages ranging from Polish to Patois, a provincial tongue most commonly heard in Jamaica.
