September Wool Use Soars As Worsted Fabrics Boom

A dramatic jump in worsted fabric production caused a sizable increase in consumption of wool for apparel at U.S. mills during September despite a lackluster market on woolen sportswear fabrics.

As expected, the biggest gain in wool use was for worsted fabrics, up substantially from 4,762,000 pounds in September 1986 to 6,939,000 pounds in September last year. But production on the woolen system also increased, moving from 4,643,000 pounds in September 1986 to 5,499,000 pounds four months ago.
