Mature liver cells were generated in adult mice from transplanted bone marrow cells, an achievement that could have far reaching clinical implications.
Neil Theise, PhD of New York University School of Medicine and colleagues transplanted bone marrow from male rats into female rats whose bone marrow had been destroyed by radiation. At up to 6 months follow-up, the researchers found that as many as 2.2% of the hepatocytes in the female rats were donor-derived, as determined by the presence of a Y chromosome.
"The present experiments show that bone marrow cells transplanted from male donors...are able to localize in the 2 largest lobes of the liver, ...
