During the past year, Minneapolis painter Doug Argue has been living and working in Rome on a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. Asked whether the Eternal City has had an impact on his painting, Argue admitted that it had, of course, but then he hedged:
"I never want influences to be so obvious they can be traced," he said, standing in his academy studio before a 10-by-10-foot painting of a dense network of leaves, a canvas he'd been working on for six months. "I mean, I'm not going to go around and put pillars in my paintings or collect color swatches of Roman ruins."
