Larry Nelson, the acting chief for the Department of Natural Resources, grew up near Albert Lea, Minn., where his father ran a mink ranch until his death when Larry was 6 years old. Nelson's mother subsequently operated the business for 20 years, during which she put her three children through college.

Nelson has been with the DNR for 32 years. He has served as planner, assistant area wildlife manager, area wildlife manager, private lands coordinator, regional wildlife manager and regional administrator.
