Like everything else, frugality has its degrees. Some people clip coupons and recycle faithfully. But when it comes time to buy a new major appliance, they buy the cheapest model available or depend solely on the expertise of one salesperson.
Maybe clipping coupons saves hundreds of dollars over a year's time, but with the right information and skills, shoppers can save hundreds of dollars on a single appliance. Considering that more than 20 percent of a household's energy consumption is generated by appliances, operating expenses should also be considered part of the "lifetime" price of an appliance.
