When Frost Lake Elementary teacher Sheilah Smith opened last week's paycheck, she jokingly asked her principal, "Is there anything you can do about this?"
What AnnaMarie Erbes couldn't tell her was that the matter already was taken care of.
On Friday, the St. Paul teacher was one of four Minnesota educators surprised by a $25,000 check from the Milken Family Foundation of California.
In St. Paul, Perham, Deephaven, and Grand Marais, students huddled around their favorite teachers, fingers crossed, as state Education Commissioner Bob Wedl led the "prize patrol" of education leaders who flew around the state to distribute the awards. The winners ...
