As Twins fans know all too well, some professional sports franchises talk about competing. Others do something about it, namely spending the money necessary to win.
The Twins once again tried a low-budget means of competing this season, signing several veteran free agents of the non-All-Star variety last winter. The result: The Twins today will finish their sixth consecutive losing season.
The strategy looked promising during the first half, when the Twins flirted with .500. But they faltered in the final two months, going 18-35 since Aug. 1 entering Saturday's game against Cleveland.
