Tim Shanley didn't believe his informant - at first.
It was 1996 and the informant described a highly organized group of Mexican nationals who were importing 40 to 50 pounds of methamphetamine a month into St. Paul and South St. Paul.
Shanley, a drug-fighting cop for 25 years, knew that other Midwestern states were being inundated with meth. Still, 50 pounds a month, valued at $400,000 to $650,000, seemed outrageous.
But 1 1/2 years, six wiretaps and 23 indictments later, Shanley and John Boulger - members of the federal Drug Task Force in Minneapolis - would help put away the largest meth importers ever prosecuted in Minnesota.
