Both are women and both are Republicans, but the race between Hennepin County Board Member Mary Tambornino and challenger Lynn Swon offers voters in some of the county's affluent western suburbs a surprising commodity - choice.
Republicans Randy Johnson and Penny Steele will sail through without any opposition in the two other races on the seven-member board.
But first-term Board Member Tambornino is facing an aggressive challenge from Swon, a vice president of the Dain Rauscher brokerage firm who never has run for public office before. Swon was recruited by Republicans who thought Tambornino did not reflect the fiscal conservatism of District 6.
