Livan Hernandez defected from the Cuban National team in September 1995 during a tournament in Monterrey, Mexico. Twenty-three months later, Hernandez was the hero of the Florida Marlins' 1997 championship, winning the MVP awards in the National League Championship Series and the World Series.
On Dec. 26, 1997, Livan's older half-brother, Orlando Hernandez, defected from Cuba with seven others in some type of watercraft. He was picked up three days later by the U.S. Coast Guard on a Caribbean island.
On Saturday night, Orlando Hernandez was all that was between the New York Yankees and a serious predicament in the American League Championship Series. ...
