You might look for Pop Wagner's singing cowboy soul in his voice, soft and sentimental and a little mirthful, or in his face: the twinkling eyes, the end-of-the-trail mustache, the Stetson creases on his forehead.
Or you might look to his hands. They are work-toughened and strong, but they are hands equally comfortable holding reins, rope and guitar. With his hands, Pop commands or comforts Buddy, his Palomino partner.
"You don't need to give a horse treats," he said, gently stroking Buddy's neck. "This is all he needs."
