Gen. John Vessey Jr., former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday that a military strike against Iraq probably won't persuade Saddam Hussein to permanently yield to demands to allow U.N. officials to resume weapons inspections.
As in the past, Iraq might back down temporarily, he said, but that shouldn't discourage the international community from continuing to apply pressure.
"Don't give up," Vessey said. "It's not an easy solution [to force Iraq to meet U.N. demands and] it's easy for us to be frustrated." But he said the effort is worthwhile because "it sets the standard for how to deal with this in the future."
