Various artists, "Awesome God: A Tribute to Rich Mullins," Reunion.
Rich Mullins switched record labels shortly before his death last year. Perhaps because he had been at Reunion for so long, it felt a need to do something to honor his music. Former Mullins' producer Reed Arvin steers this 11-song project, which features Mullins' hits reinterpreted by friends such as Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith.
While good intentions may have motivated the project, the results are less than satisfying. The powerful messages in Mullins' songs are tamed by schlocky instrumentals and lame arrangements, especially those sung by Kevin Max, Gary Chapman ...
