Want to play the toy market? Today's the day.(VARIETY)

When you buy toys this holiday season, it might be fun to contemplate their value in the antique market a century or so from now.

The toy collection from the estate of a Minnesota woman, Carol F. Andersen, is being sold today at Sotheby's in New York. The estimated prices each toy will bring range from several hundred dollars to $18,000.

Among the upper-end toys:

- The General Grant Smoker, patented in 1877, is one of the most sought-after toys produced by the American manufacturer Ives. It combines a fine likeness of the general with an ingenious mechanism that has Grant exhaling perfect smoke rings. Estimated price: $8,000 to $10,000.
