One Minnesotan grabbed her Olympic spot Friday. Another solidified her status as the top American cross-country racer heading into next month's Nagano Olympics.
Kara Hermanson Salmela, a former standout track athlete at Elk River High, won a spot on the U.S. biathlon team Friday by finishing first in the 15-kilometer race at the Olympic Trials in Jericho, Vt.
Meanwhile, in Lake Placid, N.Y., Suzanne King, a 33-year-old Minneapolis teacher whose spot on the Olympic team is already secure, collected a $10,000 bonus by winning a two-day cross-country ski race. The combined race was comprised of Thursday's 5K classic and Friday's 15K freestyle pursuit.
