Dennis Green blinked first.

Reversing his often-stated pledge to not work in the final year of his contract, the Vikings coach on Monday ruled out resignation and said he will return for a seventh season in 1998.

After weeks of escalating tension between Green and Vikings president Roger Headrick over the coach's request for a contract extension, the two met Sunday morning at Headrick's San Diego hotel and reached agreement about Green's status next season.

Green said Headrick assured him he (Green) will coach the Vikings next season no matter who buys them. Green's attorney and agent both said they are recommending the commitment be written ...
