Several Minnesota schools seem to make annual trips to the state gymnastics meet, but Waseca hasn't been one of them. Before this winter, the Bluejays' only other state tournament trip was in 1990.
"And that was a fluke," Waseca coach Rita Miller said.
Nothing that happened Friday to Waseca at St. Paul's Roy Wilkins Auditorium resembled luck. The state's best Class A team proved it, scoring 143.25 points to outdistance Mahtomedi (142.375) and Melrose (141.6) for the title.
Melrose established a state meet record in vaulting with a score of 37.325, breaking the previous mark of 37.25 set by Mahtomedi in 1992.
