Fifty years ago on April 21 - Earth Day this year - Aldo Leopold died of a heart attack at age 61 while fighting a brush fire that threatened his famed "shack" near Baraboo, Wis.

The next day, upon hearing the news, waterfowl researcher Albert Hochbaum penned this eulogy to Leopold, who is widely known as the father of American conservation:
