When Uncle Al received his most recent mailing from Publishers Clearing House (as opposed to the previous week's mailing) he did what he always does, although he's not sure why he does it:
He scanned the sheet of magazine stamps to see whether there were any magazines to which he might actually want to subscribe. (In the mailings from Publishers Clearing House and Reader's Digest that offer compact discs or books or assorted porcelain statuettes of yodeling frogs, he looks to see whether there are any that he wouldn't immediately repent of having ordered.)
