Assisi is a good base for day trips to Spello, Perugia, Arezzo, Gubbio and Santa Maria degli Angeli, a little village that is essentially an extension of Assisi itself. Other equally attractive villages beckon - Todi, Foligno, Spoleto.
None is more than an hour or two away by car and each has unique claims to attention: breathtaking mountain valleys and views en route to Gubbio; a good art museum, gloomy cathedral and fine shops in Perugia; a little Roman ruin to picnic beside in Arezzo; two dazzling little churches in Spello; St. Francis' own first chapel enshrined inside a drafty cathedral in Santa Maria.
