Last week's wind, rain and hail were particularly treacherous for birds, as the storm came at the peak of nesting season. More than 400 animals, most of them baby birds, have been brought to the University of Minnesota's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center since Friday. The 122 animals that arrived Sunday set a new intake record for one day; the average daily intake during peak nesting season is 50 birds.
These little charges demand to be fed every half-hour. Because there are so many birds in the avian nursery, there is a shortage of human surrogate parents to feed ...
