Ambitious commercial and residential development projects typically are slated for the open expanses of farm fields or abandoned industrial sites. But not in Richfield.
The city is considering plans to redevelop a prime 35-acre strip of land along heavily traveled and highly visible Interstate Hwy. 494 that would displace the Wally McCarthy's and Walser car dealerships from their longtime locations. Preliminary plans for the project - dubbed Interchange West - call for a seven-story office building, restaurants, two hotels and about 200 attached townhouses - uses that eventually could generate more property tax revenue for the city.
