Minnesota Gophers fullback Stan Kostka's running abilities were so special that sports writers in the 1930s were constantly attempting to come up with a grand nickname for the All-America athlete.
The writers, including the famous Grantland Rice, called him "Snorting Stan the Blasting Bull," "Scourge of the Prairie" and "Stamping Stan the King Kong Man." After his performance during the Gophers' victory over Pittsburgh to win the mythical national championship in 1934, one writer wondered how any defense was going to stop him.. "One might as well try to curb a runaway locomotive," he said.
