The Independent Television Service, established to bring more diversity to public broadcasting, will move from St. Paul to San Francisco this summer, mainly to tap new funding sources and make more connections with digital businesses.

The nonprofit organization was formed in 1989 by Congress in response to complaints from independent producers that the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) was relying too heavily on the same sources. The Independent Television Service (ITVS), which has a budget of more than $7 million, has a mandate to support regional, racial, ethical and other issues not often represented on TV.
