The Rev. Paul Marx, the founder and leader of a controversial group of abortion opponents, played tour guide this week. He took a busload of his Human Life International followers to rural Minnesota and showed them where he was born and baptized, where he lived and went to school.

"They wanted to see where I came from," Marx said Wednesday, a few hours before HLI's opening mass at the St. Paul Cathedral. "They took pictures. So much has changed."

Marx, born in St. Michael, Minn., was the 15th of 17 children born to a dairy farmer and his wife. He was ordained 50 years ago and was a monk at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville. His brother, Michael, also a ...
