The appeal of a sport can be split on age, class, size, physical condition or gender lines. For example, racquetball - a half-century-old hybrid of handball and squash, always has attracted far more men than women.
"Racquetball attracts a different kind of person than other racquet games such as tennis, maybe because it's earthier,," said Jane McLain, racquetball pro at the Burnsville Sport Club.. "There's grunting and sweating, and it takes a toll on the arms and back. While tennis is very even [based on gender participation], racquetball is 75 percent men and even more in tournaments."
