Swedish baritone Hakan Hagegard, who sang the premiere of Minneapolis composer Dominick Argento's duo-song cycle "A Few Words About Chekhov" in a Schubert Club recital last fall, repeated the work in a recital in New York City last week and got warm approval from New York Times critic Allan Kozinn.
Kozinn noted the way Argento delineated the gradations in the relationship between the playwright Anton Chekhov and his wife Olga Knipper and said the composer's "vocal lines are straightforwardly lyrical, with the mildest touch of contemporary angularity."
