By all admissions, District 202's old space in the 2500 block of Nicollet Av. S. in Minneapolis was a squat.
As its mission statement says, it was "a different kind of youth center," one that served as "a safe haven, a free hangout space, and a home away from home" for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people.
It was also a sad, sorry storefront filled with hand-me-down furniture fit to bequeath to no one. Mice were frequent visitors. In summer, oscillating fans did little more than bathe people in musty hot air.
