With spring waterfowl surveys showing overall duck numbers up 13 percent from a year ago, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has confirmed it will offer states the option of a 60-day, six-ducks-daily season this fall.
Service officials held season-setting meetings last week in Washington, where the spring survey results were released. Some duck species, including gadwall and shovelers, are at record levels. Mallards - the primary indicator of the health of duck populations - are estimated at 9.9 million this spring, the highest since 1970.
