President Clinton said Thursday that he will nominate a St. Paul lawyer and member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa to head the federal commission regulating tribal casinos, a panel that some members of Congress have targeted for greater responsibility.
Clinton picked Tadd Johnson, of Lino Lakes, to be chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission.
The chairman has power to enforce regulations requiring background checks on tribal casino managers and to approve management contracts between tribes and outside firms. The panel can fine or close casinos that don't comply with the rules.
Johnson was not available for comment Thursday.
