Published 07/31/97: A map that appeared with this article incorrectly reported the state of standards in U.S. schools. The keys for states with strong standards in the four core subject areas, and for states with strong standards in one to three of the four core subject areas were transposed. Idaho should have been designated as having strong standards in the four core subject areas, and Iowa belonged in the category with no standards.
