A look at the next step for local dance groups.(ENTERTAINMENT)

These are the dog days of dance, and we're not talking Tap Dogs (although, FYI, those hearty Australian powerhouses will return to town in October). Almost everyone is touring to a summer festival or planning a fall season or cooling out somewhere. So it's a good time to look ahead.

First, good news for a couple of local troupes: The National Dance Project, run by the New England Foundation for the Arts, has awarded $400,000 in production grants to 14 contemporary dance projects to support the creation of new works. Along with a lot of familiar names - Trisha Brown, Joe Goode, Bebe Miller, Meredith Monk - two Minneapolis-based companies made the cut.
