They gathered around the pool table, staring at their counterparts and muttering in heavy accents, waiting to see who would make the first move in this showdown of East meets West.
Then Christoph, one of the boys from Vienna, reached across the table, grabbed a ball and rolled it across the felt - much to the consternation of the Americans.
"No, no, that's not the way," said Erin Graner, 9, of Anoka. Suddenly, the dozen preteens broke into laughter - perfect harmony in any language.
"This could only happen here in Minnesota," Christoph said between giggles.
