Though Minnesota's northwoods are the most popular destination for the state's deer hunters, hunters in the southern farmlands are at least four times more likely to be involved in a firearms accident than are hunters in any other part of the state.
The risk to hunters is greatest this weekend, when the state's 1997 firearms deer-hunting season opens one-half hour before sunrise Saturday. Nearly half of firearms deer-hunting accidents in Minnesota in the 1990s occurred during the first two days of the season.
Most of the accidents - about 63 percent - took place either in wooded areas or in standing crops, making hunter visibility a key issue. Yet a 1994 ...
