Publishers are becoming more and more inventive in their efforts to lure readers into their books. One of the latest gimmicks is one that has been a feature of expensive British music magazines for some time: the inclusion of a compact disc (in some cases more than one) to provide examples of the subjects under discussion.
The Rhino History of Rock 'n' Roll: The '70s, by Eric Lefcowitz (Pocket Books, $24.95) offers an overview of the decade that featured not only disco and shock rock, but punk, funk and soul. Among the dozens of musicians who were at or near their peaks as artists were Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Marvin Gaye.
