President Clinton opened the Oval Office to opponents of affirmative action Friday after they were locked out of previous meetings of the White House race initiative.
Nine conservatives from political and academic worlds told the president that there was a difference between affirmative action as originally conceived and "preference programs" that affirmative action has largely become.
"We're not opposed to all affirmative action, but we have a strong objection to preferences," said Ward Connerly, the black University of California regent who spearheaded a drive to end state college admissions programs based on race and gender.
