In a surprising new study, Harvard researchers say they have found that a diet high in fat - especially from vegetable sources - could protect some people against strokes, the nation's third leading killer after heart disease and cancer.
They said they have evidence that a diet extremely low in fat - one designed to reduce the risk of heart attacks - could increase the risk of stroke, at least in middle-aged men.
In a report in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, the researchers said that the risk of stroke dropped 15 percent for every 3 percent increase in fat as a percentage of daily calories.
