The first formal protest against slavery in the Western world occurred on this day in 1688 when Francis Daniel Pastorius, Gerhard Hendericks and Dirck and Abraham Op den Graeff signed a declaration in Germantown, Pa. That information comes from a book "The African-American Book of Days" by Julia Stewart (Citadel Press, $16.95). It provides a significant event in black history for each day of the year. Events noted are not just political, but also social, athletic, cultural, scientific, educational or musical.
