While Fairview Health System has been talking with the University of Minnesota about a potential merger, one of its largest customers is considering moving its business elsewhere.
Bloomington-based HealthPartners, which has more than 700,000 members in its health maintenance organizations, has invited four of Fairview's competitors to bid on the business that it now funnels to Fairview's Riverside hospital.
Through its Group Health HMO, HealthPartners is a significant customer at Fairview Riverside. About one-fourth of the hospital's revenues and a large chunk of its inpatient admissions are Group Health patients.
