Bob Nasby of St. Paul and I first fished together 15 years ago or so, standing waist deep in Lake Michigan, casting flies to brown trout at night, in the snow. Later we fished off Key West, Fla., for tarpon, on the St. Croix River and on other waters.
Bob is a great caster who, appropriately, operates his own fly-casting schools. In the interview below, I asked him how anglers can become more proficient with their fly rods.
Q. How did you learn to cast a fly rod? A. I started in 1963, and for the first 10 years, I was essentially self-taught. I thought I was doing pretty well until I met some people who were really doing well.
