Kor Xiong was 5 when his family joined the exodus of Hmong people to the Chieng-Kham refugee camp in Thailand. Xiong's family came from the hills of Laos, as did most Hmong who wound up in the refugee camps.
The exodus to Thailand started near the end of the Vietnam War. Many Hmong had worked on behalf of the United States during the war, and they left the Laotian hills to avoid Communist retribution.
