On the night of March 21, CBS-TV coverage of the men's college basketball tournament round of 16 included games involving the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation, Kentucky and Massachusetts. Wake Forest and Georgetown also had games that night, which meant that two of the most well-known talents in the game, Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson, were also on CBS.
Yet on that Thursday night, the most popular tournament in the nation could do no better than No. 2 in the ratings. The winner? The World Figure Skating Championships. And this was not the women's competition, always most popular among Americans. This was the men's event.
